When someone searches "plumber near me" or "electrician Penrith", Google shows a map pack and then a handful of websites. SEO for tradies is the work of getting your business into that map pack and onto page one for the suburbs you service. Most of it is free and comes down to your Google Business Profile, a clear website, steady reviews and answering the calls that result. This is what actually matters, in the order I would do it.
1. How Google decides who to show
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the person searching) and prominence (how well known you are, which Google says draws on things like links from other websites and your reviews). It also says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. That tells you what to work on: a complete and accurate profile, a website that matches what you do, and good reviews. Nobody can promise you a number one spot, and anyone who does is guessing.
2. Fix your Google Business Profile first
This is the highest-return step for most tradies.
- Claim and verify it, with your real business name and phone number. No keywords stuffed into the name.
- Pick the right main category (for example plumber, electrician, air conditioning contractor) and add the secondary ones that fit.
- Service area business? If you go to customers and don't serve them at your address, Google says to remove the address from the profile. You can list up to 20 service areas, using named areas such as suburbs or postcodes, not a radius, and Google suggests staying within about two hours' drive of your base.
- Fill in everything: hours (including after-hours call-outs), services, a clear description, your website link and the number that gets answered.
- Add real photos of your work, your van and your team.
- One profile per business, not one per suburb.
3. Reviews: ask every customer, honestly
Reviews feed prominence and also decide who gets the call. Ask every happy customer, soon after the job, with a direct link. Reply to every review, good or bad. Don't offer discounts or gifts for reviews, and don't only ask people you expect to be positive, as both go against Google's review rules (check the current policy). If you use GoHighLevel, a review request can send automatically after a job is marked complete. See GoHighLevel Google review automation.
4. Your website: match what people search
- One page per main service, such as blocked drains, hot water, switchboard upgrades, ducted air conditioning. Each with a clear heading, what is included, your service area and a call button.
- Suburb or town pages only where you really work, with real content for that area: jobs you have done, local details, questions customers ask. Pages that swap only the suburb name are thin and don't help.
- Tap-to-call number on every page and a short quote form. Most trade searches happen on a phone.
- Page titles with the service and place, such as "Emergency Plumber Penrith | [Business]".
- Show proof: licence number, insurance, real photos, reviews, and how you price.
- Fast and mobile-first. A slow site loses the caller before Google matters.

5. Be listed where customers look
Keep your business name, address (if you show one) and phone number identical everywhere: your website, Google, Facebook and the directories and marketplaces your customers use, such as hipages. Consistent listings help Google trust the details. Links from local sources, such as suppliers, trade associations and community sites, add to prominence.
6. Answer the calls that SEO brings in
SEO that brings calls you miss is wasted. Make sure the calls and enquiries land somewhere:
- A missed-call text-back that replies in seconds. See missed-call text-back and speed to lead.
- An AI receptionist for the calls you can't pick up. See AI receptionist Australia.
- A CRM that follows up quotes. See CRM for tradies.
- Texting customers needs consent. See the Spam Act and SMS.
7. What to expect and how to measure it
- Timing. Profile fixes and reviews can move you in weeks. Website pages usually take months to settle, and results vary by town and trade.
- Measure: calls, direction requests and website clicks in your Business Profile; searches and pages in Google Search Console; and the number of enquiries you actually book.
- Judge it on jobs, not rankings. A steady stream of calls from your service area is the goal.
8. Common mistakes
- Keyword-stuffing the business name on Google.
- A different phone number or business name on each site.
- Fifty suburb pages with the same text.
- Buying reviews or links from cheap packages, which can get a profile suspended.
- Paying for SEO and never checking the call numbers.

Frequently asked questions
How do tradies rank on Google Maps?
Google says local ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence. Verify and complete your Google Business Profile with the right categories and service areas, keep your name, address and phone number consistent, and collect real reviews. Google says you cannot pay for a better local ranking.
Should a tradie show their home address on Google?
If you go to customers and do not serve them at your address, Google says to remove the address from your profile and list service areas instead. You can list up to 20 named service areas, such as suburbs or postcodes, not a radius.
How long does SEO take for a tradie business?
Google Business Profile fixes and new reviews can change results in weeks. Website pages usually take months to settle, and results vary by town and trade. Judge it by calls and booked jobs, not just rankings.
