I couldn't find a native ActiveCampaign connector in HighLevel's help docs, so "integrating" the two means one of three things: sending data between them with webhooks, putting Zapier, Make or n8n in the middle, or moving everything across to GoHighLevel. Which one is right depends on whether you want to keep both tools. Here is how each works, with the exact settings, and where it breaks.
1. Decide first: keep both, or move?
Running two CRMs side by side is the expensive option, because every contact now lives in two places and one of them is always slightly out of date. It makes sense in two cases: you are mid-migration and need both live for a few weeks, or a team or client you can't move yet depends on ActiveCampaign. If neither applies, migrating is usually cleaner (section 5).
2. Send contacts from GoHighLevel to ActiveCampaign
Use a workflow with the Custom Webhook action to call ActiveCampaign's API directly. No third-party tool needed.
- In ActiveCampaign, open your user's Settings > Developer tab and copy the API URL and API key. Each user has their own key.
- In GoHighLevel, open the workflow and click + Add action > Send Data > Custom Webhook.
- Set the Event to CUSTOM, so you get the Method, Content-Type and Raw Body fields. Method: POST. Content-Type: application/json.
- URL:
https://YOURACCOUNT.api-us1.com/api/3/contact/sync(use the API URL from step 1). - Add a header named
Api-Tokenwith your key as the value. - In the Raw Body, send the contact as JSON and insert the contact values with the dynamic value picker.
{
"contact": {
"email": "{{contact.email}}",
"firstName": "{{contact.first_name}}",
"lastName": "{{contact.last_name}}",
"phone": "{{contact.phone}}"
}
}The contact/sync endpoint creates or updates a contact by email. It returns 201 when it created a new contact and 200 when it updated an existing one, and fields you leave out keep their current values. A few details from ActiveCampaign's API reference that trip people up:
- Phone must be a string. A number fails with a 422 error, and so does an invalid email.
- Tags and lists are separate calls. The sync body can carry them, but if you only need to add a tag to an existing contact, the API has its own endpoints for tags and list subscriptions.
- Custom fields are sent as
fieldValues, each with the field's numeric ID and a value. You need to look up the IDs in ActiveCampaign first. - The limit is 5 requests per second per account. Beyond that you get a 429 response with a Retry-After header. A workflow that fires for a bulk import can hit it, so add a wait step or stagger the enrolment.
Test with a sample contact and open the workflow's Execution Logs to see the response code. HighLevel's docs don't say whether Custom Webhook needs a particular plan or has a usage charge, so confirm that in your account before you build the whole flow around it.
3. Send contacts from ActiveCampaign to GoHighLevel
The other direction works the same way in reverse:
- In GoHighLevel, create a workflow and choose the Inbound Webhook trigger. HighLevel generates a unique URL for that workflow. Copy it.
- In ActiveCampaign, open the automation and add the Webhook action (under Workflow in the Add an action window). Paste the URL.
- Run a test contact through so GoHighLevel receives a sample, then map the incoming fields in the trigger and save.
ActiveCampaign's webhook action sends the contact's name, email, phone, custom fields, tags, contact ID and IP address. Account and deal data aren't included unless you add them to the URL as personalisation tags. Two limits on its side: the receiving URL has to be HTTPS on the default port 443, and only the webhook headers can be customised.
HighLevel's inbound webhook article doesn't explain how incoming data creates or matches a contact, so don't assume it de-duplicates. Add an explicit step in the workflow to create or update the contact by email, then test it by sending the same person twice.
4. Use Zapier, Make or n8n in the middle
If you'd rather not hand-write API calls, a tool in the middle does the field mapping and error handling for you. Zapier's HighLevel app is called LeadConnector, and any event it doesn't cover can still be sent from a workflow's webhook action. The trade-off is another subscription and another thing that can fail. I compare them in GoHighLevel vs n8n vs Make vs Zapier, and cover the HighLevel side in GoHighLevel with n8n and Zapier and connecting any app to GoHighLevel.
5. Moving from ActiveCampaign to GoHighLevel
HighLevel has its own ActiveCampaign migration guide. The contact part is a CSV import:
- In ActiveCampaign, go to Contacts > Export and include email, names, phone, tags and the custom fields you use. Keep the file name plain, without special characters.
- Clean the file: dates as
YYYY-MM-DD, UTF-8 encoding, no emojis or line breaks, and a valid email on every row. - In GoHighLevel, open Contacts > Import Contacts, upload the file and map each column. Columns with no matching field are ignored unless you create a custom field first.
Things that cause failed or messy imports:
- Country names must match HighLevel's list. "United States" works, "USA" doesn't. Phone numbers in international format (E.164) are safest.
- Duplicates are handled by your Duplicate Detection Settings (contact ID, phone or email), so check those before importing into an account that already has contacts.
- There is no undo. Import a small sample file first and check the mapping.
- Deals are a separate import. Create the pipelines and stages in HighLevel first. An opportunities-only file needs a contact ID, opportunity name and pipeline on every row.
- File size: HighLevel's articles state both 30 MB and 50 MB, so check the limit on the import screen and split big exports.
The CSV moves people, not logic. Automations, campaigns and forms have to be rebuilt as workflows, and that is the bigger job. More in how to migrate to GoHighLevel and GoHighLevel alternatives if you're still weighing the move.
6. What goes wrong with a two-way sync
- Loops. A contact updated in A triggers a sync to B, which counts as an update in B, which syncs back to A. Break it by syncing only on specific events (a tag added, a form submitted), never on "contact updated".
- Consent doesn't travel. Unsubscribes and do-not-disturb flags need to be synced on purpose. If someone opts out in one tool and you keep messaging them from the other, that is your compliance problem.
- Duplicates. Email is the safest match key. Phone-only contacts and shared family emails create duplicates fast.
- Silent failures. A webhook that returns 401 or 422 doesn't stop the workflow. Check the Execution Logs after the first week, not just on day one. See workflow not working.

Frequently asked questions
Does GoHighLevel integrate with ActiveCampaign?
I could not find a native ActiveCampaign connector in HighLevel's help docs. You connect them with a Custom Webhook calling the ActiveCampaign API, with an Inbound Webhook trigger the other way, or with Zapier, Make or n8n in the middle.
How do I send GoHighLevel contacts to ActiveCampaign?
Add a Custom Webhook action (Send Data) to a workflow, set the event to CUSTOM and the method to POST, call your ActiveCampaign API URL ending in /api/3/contact/sync with an Api-Token header, and send the contact as JSON. It creates or updates the contact by email.
How do I migrate from ActiveCampaign to GoHighLevel?
Export your contacts as a CSV from ActiveCampaign, clean the dates, encoding and country names, then import it under Contacts > Import Contacts in GoHighLevel and map the columns. Deals are imported separately and automations have to be rebuilt as workflows.
