Many businesses use GoHighLevel through an agency: the agency owns the main account and the business has a sub-account under it. Sooner or later the question comes up: can I move my sub-account to my own agency account, or to a different agency? Yes. This guide explains agency accounts vs sub-accounts, the two ways to transfer, the exact steps, what moves and what doesn't, and what to check afterwards so nothing breaks.
1. Agency account vs sub-account
- Agency account: the top level, which pays HighLevel for the plan ($97, $297 or $497 a month) and manages any number of businesses. See GoHighLevel pricing.
- Sub-account ("agency sub"): one business's workspace, with its own contacts, conversations, calendars, phone numbers, funnels and workflows.
If you're a business on an agency's account, the agency controls billing, can see your data and decides what features you get. That's fine while the relationship works, but it's why owners eventually want the account under their own control.
2. Why move a sub-account?
- You're ending the relationship with your agency but want to keep your setup.
- You want to own your data and billing directly.
- You're an agency taking over a client from another agency.
- You're merging agencies or consolidating accounts.
If the real issue is that the account was never set up well, moving it alone won't fix that; see whether to stay, switch or fix the setup.
3. The two ways to transfer
| Option | When to use it | How |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer to an existing agency | You (or your new agency) already have a GoHighLevel agency account | The current agency sends a transfer request using the receiving agency's Relationship Number; the receiving agency approves |
| Eject to a new agency | You don't have an agency account yet | The current agency starts the eject and names you as the new owner; you sign up and the sub-account becomes yours |
Either way, the current agency has to start it. You can't move a sub-account out from inside it yourself.
4. Step by step: transfer to an existing agency
Receiving agency
- Find your Relationship Number: click the question-mark (help) icon in your agency dashboard.
- Send it to the agency that currently holds the sub-account.
- Make sure your account is active, has room for another sub-account, and has any compliance add-ons the sub-account uses (for example HIPAA).
Releasing agency
- Go to Agency view → Sub-Accounts and choose Manage Client on the sub-account.
- Select Actions → Transfer Sub-account.
- Enter the Relationship Number and confirm.
Approve
The receiving agency approves from the email notification or from Sub-Accounts → Sub-account Transfers. Both sides can track the request there (pending, completed, rejected, cancelled or blocked), and the releasing agency can cancel it before approval. By default only the Agency Owner can send or approve transfers, though they can give that permission to agency admins. Agencies moving many clients can use bulk transfer.
5. What moves with the sub-account
The whole sub-account moves as one unit: contacts, conversations, account history and supported assets such as funnels, websites, workflows and pipelines stay together. Partial transfers aren't possible, and you can't merge two sub-accounts in a transfer.
Phone numbers and A2P
- If both agencies use LC Phone: numbers move with the sub-account, eligible A2P registration stays with them, and future usage is billed to the receiving agency.
- If either agency uses Twilio: numbers don't move automatically and need a separate migration with the Twilio account owner. Plan this before you transfer so calls and texts don't stop.
- Sending domains owned by the sub-account move; domains assigned by the old agency are removed.
- A dedicated email IP is unassigned.
- Mailgun or SMTP settings are removed and the sub-account uses the receiving agency's default email provider.
6. What to check straight after the transfer
- Reconnect integrations: Google, Facebook and Instagram, payment providers such as Stripe, calendars and any third-party apps.
- Check phone numbers send and receive texts and calls, and that A2P 10DLC is still approved.
- Check email sending: domain, SPF, DKIM and DMARC. See emails going to spam.
- Test every live workflow. Anything that relied on a disconnected integration will fail silently. See why workflows stop working.
- Check forms, calendars and booking links on your website and Google profile.
- Review users and permissions: remove people from the old agency who shouldn't have access.
- Re-subscribe add-ons you need, such as AI, WhatsApp or WordPress hosting.
7. If your agency won't transfer it
Agencies can't be forced to start a transfer, and contracts sometimes say who owns the account. Talk to them first; most will release it. If they won't:
- Export everything you can access: contacts (CSV with tags and custom fields), opportunities, and copies of email and SMS templates.
- Screenshot or document key workflows, calendars and forms.
- Ask your number provider about porting your phone numbers.
- Rebuild in your own account. It's also a chance to clean up; see how to migrate to GoHighLevel.
8. Before you sign up with any agency
Ask who owns the sub-account and the data, whether they'll transfer it if you leave, and who owns the phone numbers and domains. Getting this in writing avoids most problems later. More on choosing help in GoHighLevel VA vs agency vs freelancer.
Who should have access afterwards? See GoHighLevel user roles and permissions.

Frequently asked questions
Does HighLevel charge to transfer a sub-account?
HighLevel doesn't charge for the transfer itself. Billing for the sub-account moves to the receiving agency's plan, and phone numbers or A2P moves can involve their own steps.
How long does a sub-account transfer take?
Once both agencies have approved it, the account itself moves quickly. Phone numbers, A2P registration and reconnecting integrations can take longer, so plan a quiet day for it.
Can I move a sub-account between two agency accounts I own?
Yes. Use the same transfer process, with your second agency account as the receiver.
